William Garrigues Shields ("Garrig"), Co-founder and Managing Member of Shields Reeves, PLLC, is an experienced personal injury attorney with additional practice in commercial transactions and regulatory administrative law.
Drawing from a broad range of experience—as a law clerk at North Mississippi Legal Aid Services, intern to Federal District Judge Sharon Aycock, as a Special Assistant Attorney General, and Deputy Executive Director for MDHS, Garrig’s practical insight, innovative perspective, and attention to detail contribute to his overall ability to navigate complex legal problems in a way that both makes business sense and mitigates risk. Garrig began his career as General Counsel to the Executive Director’s Office of MDHS before transitioning to serve MDHS agency wide as a Special Assistant Attorney General. As a Special Assistant Attorney General, Garrig handled a diverse array of transactional and civil litigation matters on behalf of the agency, including regulatory compliance, contract negotiation and disputes, employment law claims, injunctions, and family law matters. As counsel liaison, he assisted and advised outside counsel representing the Department of Justice and Mississippi Tort Claims Board. He also served as legislative liaison between the MDHS and Mississippi Legislature, with a key role researching and implementing several initiatives passed by the legislature.
Garrig is licensed to practice law in Mississippi and Tennessee, and a member of each state’s bar association. He is a graduate of Mississippi State University, where he earned his B.A. in 2009, and obtained his J.D. from the University of Mississippi School of Law in 2012.
